Emergency Vet FAQ

Many pet owners have questions when it comes to emergency situations and we completely understand so we made this FAQ section just for you! Some of the most common questions we get asked are:

What should I do if my pet is having difficulty breathing?

Difficulty breathing is a prime emergency. This often happens when a pet has eaten something that blocks its airway or when it has aspirated food or water into the lungs. Other things which can cause breathing problems in pets include congestive heart failure, heat stroke, pneumonia, and cancer.

Ensure your pets airway is clear of debris, if something is lodged in its throat, use your finger to remove it. If choking persists, call right away to get you pet to an emergency vet near you.

What to do if my pet is bleeding profusely?

You will see blood if your animal has a bad cut or wound. However, it may not be easy to tell how bad the wound is or how badly it’s bleeding. The best thing to do is apply pressure with a clean towel or gauze and call an emergency vet clinic to get your pet the help it needs.

What to do if my pet has been hit by a vehicle?

When your dog, cat, or other pet gets hit by a vehicle, it can cause serious internal injuries. These can include fractured legs, punctured lungs, head trauma, and broken necks. When you see your pet in this condition, don’t take chances; immediately take it to an emergency clinic for treatment.

What should I do if my pet is shaking and trembling?

If your animal is trembling or shaking uncontrollably, it may be suffering from a life-threatening emergency, such as nicotine poisoning. It can also indicate a stroke or head injury as well as something as benign as low blood sugar (in pets who eat too much sugary food). However, don’t take chances; if you see your pet trembling and shaking, call emergency vet services for personnel to check its condition.

What to do if my dog or cat is choking?

There are some emergency situations that require immediate attention, and choking is one of them. You’ll know that your pet is choking if it suddenly starts making a gagging noise or if you see it drop food from its mouth.

If you have tried to clear the airway of your pet and failed, call emergency vet ABQ immediately to save the life of your pet!

What should I do if my dog or cat is having a seizure?

Seizures happen when a pet’s brain isn’t providing the correct signals to its body and sends abnormal electrical impulses. If your animal is having seizures, you’ll see its muscles start jerking uncontrollably and it will go into an unconscious state.

There is unfortunately not much that can be done at home to remedy such a situation. Always call an emergency vet if you think that this is happening to your pet.

My dog or cat is vomiting or has diarrhea, what should I do to help?

Vomiting and diarrhea are both classic emergency symptoms. Your pet may have eaten something that is making it sick or it could be suffering from a serious illness such as a ruptured ulcer, pancreatitis, kidney failure, sepsis, parvovirus, or poison ingestion.

Because there are so many different things can cause this, always resort to professional help. Don’t take chances with your pet’s health, call emergency vet Albuquerque immediately.

I think my pet has been stung by a Bee, Scorpion, or other venomous insect, what can I do?

Bee stings and other insect stings can be life-threatening to pets if they’re allergic to the venom. If you find your animal with a bee sting or another type of piercing injury, especially on the face, neck or other highly-sensitive part of its body, call emergency vet ABQ immediately.

If it is possible to safely do so, try to remove the stinger but don’t use tweezers because you can cause more harm than good.

My pet has been poisoned or ate an overdose of drugs, what should I do?

Poisoning and overdoses can happen when your pet ingests harmful chemicals such as antifreeze, household cleaners, medications, chocolate, grapes or raisins. Many of these things can cause serious illness and even death to pets.

When you see the symptoms of poisoning or overdose in your dog or cat (vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, tremors), call emergency vet ABQ immediately.

What should I do if my dog, cat, or other pet is having difficulty giving birth?

It can be normal for a pet to have difficulty giving birth if it’s the first time that she is having her litter or if there are complications present due to pregnancy toxemia, fetal malposition, or fetal oversize. However, if you see your pet straining too hard without being able to have her litter, call emergency vet ABQ immediately so we can assist.
